Dell’s new 14S laptop elevates its 14-inch line with a premium aluminium chassis, extended battery performance, and comprehensive ports, targeting students and mobile workers seeking endurance over raw power, but faces price and display brightness considerations.
Dell’s 14S marks a sharper move upmarket for the company’s 14-inch line, pairing a more premium chassis with battery life that places it among the longest-lasting laptops in its class. Tom’s Guide said the model ran for 20 hours and 41 minutes in web browsing tests, a result that gives it a clear edge for students and mobile workers who value endurance over raw power.
The new design is one of the main changes. According to reviews, Dell has shifted to a three-piece aluminium build that feels closer to its more expensive XPS family, while a revised hinge reduces flex and improves the overall sense of solidity. The port selection is also unusually complete for a thin-and-light machine, with Thunderbolt 4, USB-A and HDMI 2.1 among the connections. Notebookcheck reported that Dell is offering the laptop globally with Intel’s Panther Lake platform, a 70 Wh battery and a choice of OLED or IPS displays.
Performance is aimed squarely at everyday work rather than heavy creation tasks. Tom’s Guide said the Intel Core Ultra 7 355 and 16GB of memory were enough to keep office apps, web browsing and multitasking running smoothly, while Tom’s Hardware highlighted integrated Intel graphics with four Xe cores and a 1920 x 1200 OLED touchscreen. The keyboard and trackpad were widely described as comfortable and accurate, with near-silent key action and a premium feel that suits long typing sessions.
The main compromise is the screen. Tom’s Hardware measured average brightness at 269 nits, which is relatively low and can make outdoor use difficult, even though colour and contrast were praised. Pricing is another pressure point. Dell’s starting figure, reported at $1,269, puts the 14S into territory where some buyers may begin comparing it with higher-end machines, including the XPS line. That makes the 14S an easy recommendation only for buyers who prioritise battery life, build quality and a compact form factor over maximum value.
