Foldable phones challenge the thinness trend by prioritising battery life and versatility

Recent foldable phones from Motorola and Honor demonstrate that achieving slimness does not require sacrificing battery capacity or functionality, with innovations in hinge design and charging speeds enhancing user experience amid ongoing debates about device thickness.

Foldable phones are still chasing a simple headline number: thickness. Yet the latest devices suggest that slimness matters less than what manufacturers give up to achieve it. Reviews of Motorola’s Razr Fold and Honor’s Magic V6 indicate that both brands have found ways to keep large batteries, usable hinges and fast charging in designs that remain notably slim. Tom’s Guide and Android Central both point to the Razr Fold’s 6,000mAh battery and strong charging figures, while TechRadar and Android Central describe the Magic V6 as unusually thin without sacrificing capacity.

Motorola’s case is especially persuasive. The Razr Fold is heavier and a little thicker than some rivals, but Tom’s Guide says that trade-off buys a 6,000mAh battery, 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Android Central adds that the phone also supports 5W reverse wireless charging and pairs the battery with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. More importantly, the hinge is not merely structural; it is built to hold the phone at different angles, which makes tent mode and hands-free use genuinely practical.

Honor has taken a different route but arrived at a similar conclusion. TechRadar and Android Central report that the Magic V6 folds down to 8.75mm and carries a 6,660mAh battery, which they describe as the largest in a global foldable. The phone also supports 80W wired charging and 66W wireless charging, while both displays support stylus input. That combination matters because it shows thinness does not have to mean compromise on endurance or flexibility, provided the engineering is strong enough.

The broader lesson is that foldables are now thin enough. The more interesting question is whether makers can preserve the traits that make these phones different from slab handsets: a hinge that stays useful at multiple angles, a battery that lasts through a full day and charging that keeps pace with the hardware. On that measure, Motorola and Honor make a stronger argument than a race to the smallest possible millimetre count.
