Google’s latest flagship, the Pixel 11 Pro XL, introduces barely perceptible improvements over its predecessor, raising questions about whether current Pixel owners need to upgrade amidst minimal changes to design, hardware, and camera features.
Google’s latest premium handset may sit at the top of the Pixel range, but the case for upgrading from last year’s model looks thin. A Tech Advisor review argues that the Pixel 11 Pro XL is so close to the Pixel 10 Pro XL in day-to-day use that owners of the older phone may struggle to justify a switch. On paper, the new model is larger, shinier and more powerful, but not obviously transformed.
That is partly because the overall formula has barely changed. Android Central’s comparison of the two phones says the Pixel 11 Pro XL keeps the same 6.8-inch class display, the familiar flat-back design and the signature horizontal camera bar, while the main hardware changes are concentrated inside. Leaks and early comparisons point to a Tensor G6 chip, a MediaTek modem and modest adjustments to battery efficiency rather than a full redesign.
Camera hardware is one of the few areas where Google has made a visible push. Reports say the Pixel 11 Pro XL uses larger 50Mp wide and 48Mp 5x telephoto sensors, with AI-assisted zoom extended from 100x to 120x. Even so, the improvement may be incremental rather than dramatic, especially since Tom’s Guide praised the Pixel 10 Pro XL’s still-impressive stills performance and class-leading screen, even while noting that its Tensor G5 chip lagged behind some rivals and battery life was less convincing than expected.
The result is a flagship that looks more like a refinement than a reset. Some leaks suggest minor tweaks to button placement, microphone position and the addition of new colours, while Google is also said to be keeping support for Pixelsnap magnetic accessories. For buyers coming from older phones, those details may matter. For Pixel 10 Pro XL owners, though, the newer model appears to offer the same large-screen experience with only modest gains in speed, efficiency and imaging.
