A year with the iPhone 17 Pro reveals notable improvements in durability and heat management, with the Ceramic Shield 2 and vapour chamber cooling proving vital, confirming Apple’s refinement over dramatic redesigns.
Apple’s next Pro iPhones are nearing launch, but one of the clearest signs of how well the current model has held up comes from a year of everyday use. After close to 12 months with the iPhone 17 Pro, MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera says the device has proved unusually durable, with Ceramic Shield 2 emerging as the most meaningful hardware improvement in the line-up. Used without a case, the handset has picked up only light scratching, while a previous 16 Pro was marked far more quickly. It has also survived face-down drops without screen damage, although the aluminium edges have taken some small chips.
That resilience matters because Apple’s marketing around Ceramic Shield 2 promised better scratch resistance, and independent testing reported by MacRumors after launch suggested the material does better than earlier glass in routine use. The same testing also pointed to one weak spot: the raised camera plateau, where the sharper anodised aluminium edge can be easier to scuff from keys, coins and other pocket debris. In practical terms, the phone’s front and back appear robust, but the camera housing remains an area where a case still offers real protection.
Battery life has been another strong point. Barbera said the iPhone 17 Pro has comfortably lasted through a full day of heavy use, a result that usually requires the larger Pro Max model. That experience fits Apple’s pitch at launch, when the company said the 17 Pro’s larger battery and more efficient design were intended to improve endurance across the standard Pro size. Apple also introduced vapour chamber cooling in the model, and its own promotional material described the system as a way to spread heat from the A19 Pro chip more evenly through the aluminium frame.
For most of the year, that thermal design appears to have worked as intended. Barbera said the phone generally stayed cooler than expected and performance remained steady, though he noted more heat and minor slowdowns while running beta software. Apple’s vapour chamber system was reported as a first for the iPhone when images of the part circulated before launch, and Apple later made it part of its public product messaging. The broader picture is that the iPhone 17 Pro looks less like a dramatic redesign than a refinement of the Pro formula, but one that has delivered in the areas many users notice most: durability, battery life and heat management. With rumours suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro may not bring a major leap and could cost more, MacRumors said buying the current model now may still make sense for owners of older iPhones.
