The true performance of AI laptops depends more on memory capacity and sustained power than on NPU scores. Recent developments show a market increasingly focused on unified-memory systems and portable high-capacity options, challenging traditional metrics.
Most lists of AI laptops are measuring the wrong chip. NPU scores, Copilot+ labels and top-end TOPS figures tell only part of the story. For the local language models that matter to most buyers, the real bottlenecks are memory capacity, memory bandwidth, sustained power and thermal headroom. That is why a machine that wins an NPU chart can still be slow at generating tokens, while a laptop with a stronger GPU or a larger unified-memory pool can run far bigger models more effectively.
In practical terms, the market now splits into three useful lanes. Apple’s MacBook Pro line remains the clearest unified-memory choice, with the M5 Pro at 64GB and the M5 Max reaching 128GB in the 40-core GPU configuration. Reuters-style product reporting from Apple’s launch material suggests those chips are intended to accelerate prompt processing rather than merely boost headline AI metrics. At the same time, creative-focused reviews from publications such as Creative Bloq continue to place the MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Max near the top for demanding workloads, reflecting the strength of Apple’s software stack where MLX and Metal are supported. Separately, recent IFA coverage from Tom’s Hardware shows that AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495 ecosystem is now moving into compact systems as well, including machines from Minisforum and GMKtec that pair large unified-memory pools with local AI positioning.
The fastest option for users who want CUDA and maximum raw throughput is still an RTX 50-series laptop, but the headline model name can be misleading. Notebook versions of the RTX 5090 and 5080 are not desktop equivalents, and vendor power limits vary sharply between thin-and-light designs and bulky desktop replacements. That matters because a 95W implementation and a 175W implementation can carry the same badge while delivering very different sustained performance. That does not make them automatic winners for every workload, but it does give them a clear advantage for people who need to keep larger models resident on-device.
The budget end of the market is a different category altogether. Creative Bloq’s under-$1,000 shortlist is built around NPUs because that is where the value lies at that price point: quiet cooling, long battery life and competent on-device features such as transcription, background removal and light AI-assisted editing. Those machines are useful, but they should not be mistaken for local-LLM systems. A Ryzen AI or Snapdragon-powered budget notebook may be perfectly good at Copilot-style tasks and productivity features while remaining a poor choice for running sizeable models offline.
The safest conclusion is that buyers should choose by workload rather than by marketing label. If the aim is everyday AI features, a budget Copilot+ laptop is usually enough. If the goal is large local models, the decision comes down to memory and sustained data movement, not NPU throughput. Apple’s unified-memory laptops are attractive for 70B-class models and strong battery life, high-wattage RTX systems are best for smaller models and CUDA-based workflows, and Ryzen AI Max-class machines are emerging as the most flexible Windows option for users who want capacity in a portable chassis. The common mistake is to rank these laptops as if they were competing on the same metric. They are not.
