Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 edges out Motorola Razr Fold in flagship foldable showdown

The latest foldable smartphones see Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 outperforming Motorola’s Razr Fold in display quality, software support, and versatility, though Motorola excels in battery life and camera zoom capabilities.

Samsung’s latest large foldable is aimed at people who want a device that can replace a phone and a small tablet, but Motorola’s Razr Fold makes a strong case for itself by taking a more traditional book-style approach. That difference shapes nearly every part of the comparison, from how the phones feel in the hand to how they behave for reading, video, multitasking and photography.

According to Android Central, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the model most likely to win over buyers who have previously dismissed book-style foldables. Its shorter body, lighter weight and wider outer display make it easier to carry and use than earlier generations, while the 16:10 cover screen is still practical for apps and streaming. Motorola’s Razr Fold, by contrast, is larger and heavier, but the company has added curved edges, a textured rear panel and a more pronounced grip area to improve handling. Both phones use dust and water resistance ratings in the IP48 range, though Motorola also claims an IP49 rating.

The display and hinge hardware give Samsung the clearer edge for pure polish. Samsung’s anti-reflective inner panel is designed to reduce the visibility of the crease, and the hinge opens with a controlled, quiet motion that feels refined. The Razr Fold’s crease is more obvious in direct comparison, even if it fades once the screen is lit, and its panel is more reflective. Motorola does, however, retain a useful half-open orientation for desktop-style use, which the Samsung phone does not offer.

Cameras are a more mixed story. Motorola equips the Razr Fold with a 50-megapixel telephoto camera, giving it a genuine 3x optical zoom advantage over Samsung’s cropped 2x solution. T3 reported that the Motorola phone is also the more generously specified device in the box, with 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, a 6,000mAh battery and 80W charging. But the broader imaging package appears less consistent: Android Police found Samsung’s photos generally looked more natural, while Motorola’s shots were often sharper but sometimes overprocessed, especially from the wide-angle camera.

Software support and performance tilt back towards Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 ships with Android 17 and One UI 9, while the Razr Fold launches with Android 16. Both companies promise seven years of operating system and security updates, but Samsung has the stronger record for timely delivery. On raw speed, Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy also outpaces Motorola’s standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in benchmarks and thermal behaviour, which matters more for gaming and sustained heavy use.

Battery life, though, belongs to Motorola. Samsung has moved to silicon-carbon battery technology, but the Z Fold 8’s 4,800mAh cell is still smaller than the Razr Fold’s 6,000mAh pack. Motorola also supports faster wired and wireless charging, although both phones rely on the right charger to reach their best speeds. In practical use, Android Police found the Razr Fold lasted longer on a charge, while Samsung charged more quickly to 65% in 30 minutes.

The choice between them depends on what kind of foldable user you are. Samsung is the better all-rounder for media, reading and general everyday use, with a more refined display system and stronger software support. Motorola is the more flexible productivity device, helped by its stylus support, broader multitasking tools and more useful zoom camera. For most people, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the easier phone to recommend. For users who value battery life, a stylus and more open-ended multitasking, the Razr Fold makes a convincing alternative.
