The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has passed a high-profile endurance assessment, showing improvements in chassis and hinge design, yet its foldable display continues to face vulnerabilities, with experts highlighting its plastic layer and heat sensitivity.
Samsung’s latest foldable has passed a high-profile endurance check, but the result was mixed in the way most owners would expect from a book-style device. JerryRigEverything’s Zack Nelson found that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is broadly well built, with a stronger hinge assembly and better protection against dust than some earlier foldables, yet its inner screen remains the obvious weak point. The phone uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a 7.6-inch folding display and a 5.5-inch cover screen, and the test suggested Samsung has made real progress on the chassis while leaving the flexible panel inherently vulnerable.
Nelson’s scratch testing showed the outer display behaves like a modern premium handset, with Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 marking at level six and deeper grooves at level seven. The inner panel was far less forgiving. Despite Samsung’s titanium substructure claims, the folding screen still has a plastic protective layer and begins to scratch at level two. In practical terms, that means coins, keys and similar objects can damage it far more easily than the exterior glass. The teardown also found an Armour Aluminium frame, a glass rear panel and replaceable camera lens rings, although some plastic remains around the lenses.
The video also pointed to smaller design improvements that matter in everyday use. The redesigned hinge kept out the fine dust added during testing, even if some metallic particles collected near the magnets in the corners. The device carries an IP48 rating, which reflects limited dust resistance and water protection. Nelson also said the fingerprint scanner built into the power button is unusually fast, even after abuse. Heat testing, however, showed that both displays suffered permanent burn damage after direct flame exposure, with the inner panel failing first.
The final bend test was the most reassuring part of the video. Closed, the handset held up well from both directions. Opened, it flexed markedly towards the rear, but the screen did not crack or detach. The back glass gave way before the central display did, which suggests the failure points have been pushed away from the most fragile component. That lines up with recent reviews from outlets such as Tom’s Guide, Android Central and Digital Camera World, which praise the Fold 8’s lighter passport-style design, improved crease control and strong performance while still noting the limits imposed by its compact cover screen, lack of telephoto camera and modest dust rating. A separate report from TechRadar also showed how the rear camera bump has become a point of frustration for some users, even prompting one owner to remove the module entirely in an extreme DIY fix.
