Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra faces durability tests revealing promising but fragile hinge design

Recent durability tests of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra highlight significant engineering advancements, yet expose vulnerabilities in hinge resilience, raising questions about the device’s long-term durability and repair costs.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is now facing the sort of public durability scrutiny that routinely shadows premium foldables, with JerryRigEverything’s test showing both strengths and clear weaknesses. According to GSMArena, the device was evaluated soon after launch and was found to survive the first bend attempt intact, only to fail on the second, underscoring how far foldable engineering still has to go despite rapid materials and hinge improvements. Notebookcheck’s coverage of the same test reached the same broad conclusion: the handset did not make it through the full durability challenge.

The most conventional part of the test was the outer display. GSMArena reported that the cover panel, protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, behaved as expected, with scratches appearing at Mohs level 6 and deeper marks at level 7. The inner folding panel was less reassuring, scratching at level 2 and showing deeper grooves at level 3, which remains typical for this category of device. Heat also caused permanent damage, while dust and debris made the hinge grind, even though the folding screen stayed operational during that part of the test.

The teardown that followed revealed four matching hinge pieces, visually similar to those in the standard Fold8 but not identical, suggesting Samsung has refined the mechanism rather than simply copied it across models. GSMArena also noted that the folding display’s failure after the second bend would mean an expensive repair, reportedly $639. Taken together, the results fit a familiar pattern for foldables: impressive engineering on the outside, but still vulnerable at the most mechanically demanding point of the design.
