Xiaomi 17T makes a strong case for sensible smartphone upgrades

With a bright 120Hz display, exceptional battery endurance and a rare 5x telephoto camera, Xiaomi’s 17T prioritises useful upgrades over design theatrics.

Xiaomi’s 17T is a reminder that a smartphone does not need to reinvent the category to be compelling. In a market obsessed with ever more ambitious claims, the handset stands out for a more practical reason: it delivers a carefully balanced mix of display quality, battery endurance, everyday speed and a camera system that is more versatile than its price might suggest. Digital Trends, after more than two months of testing, found it to be the sort of device that becomes easy to live with rather than easy to talk about.

That practicality starts with the hardware. Xiaomi pairs a 6.59-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, while the phone is built around MediaTek’s Dimensity 8500-Ultra, 12GB of LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 storage. Official specifications from Xiaomi also confirm a 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery, IP68 dust and water resistance, and Corning Gorilla Glass 7i protection. In daily use, those parts combine to produce a phone that feels quicker than its class suggests, even if the design itself is relatively restrained and, as several reviewers note, short on personality.

The display is one of the clearest strengths. It is bright enough for outdoor use, smooth in scrolling and sharp enough to make maps, video and social feeds look clean and vivid. Xiaomi says the panel can reach a peak brightness of 3,500 nits in specific conditions, though that figure is best understood as a maximum rather than a sustained level across normal use. Reviewers from TechRadar and GSMArena have also highlighted the panel as a major selling point, alongside the handset’s broader battery efficiency.

Battery life is another area where the 17T earns credibility. Reviewers from Digital Trends, Business Standard and Trusted Reviews all point to endurance as a core advantage, and the combination of a large battery and efficient hardware seems to be paying off in real-world use. Xiaomi’s 67W wired charging is not class-leading, but it is fast enough to make top-ups practical, especially given the size of the cell. The omission of wireless charging is noticeable, yet for many buyers the trade-off will feel acceptable if all-day stamina matters more than desk-friendly convenience.

The camera system is where the 17T moves from merely competent to genuinely interesting. Xiaomi equips it with a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, all tuned with Leica branding. That 5x lens is the phone’s most distinctive feature, giving it a level of compositional flexibility that many rivals in the upper-mid-range still lack. The main camera is reliable in daylight and respectable after dark, while the telephoto lens provides useful reach for travel, architecture and portraits. The ultra-wide is serviceable, although colour matching between the three lenses is not always seamless, and the selfie camera is competent rather than outstanding.

HyperOS 3, running on Android 16, rounds out the package with a smooth interface and a broad feature set, but it remains an area where Xiaomi has room to grow. Reviewers have broadly agreed that the software is lighter and more polished than older Xiaomi skins, yet still not as refined as the best implementations from Samsung, Google or OnePlus. Xiaomi says the 17T will receive four Android version upgrades and six years of security support, which gives it a respectable lifespan on paper. Taken together, the phone makes a persuasive case for buyers who value dependable hardware over design theatre: it is not the most memorable handset in the segment, but it may be one of the most sensible.
