Amazon has launched Alexa+ in Australia, offering a more advanced, AI-driven voice assistant that understands local accents, regional slang, and personal preferences, transforming the user experience across Echo devices and Fire TV.
Amazon has begun offering Alexa+ in Australia, bringing a more capable version of its voice assistant to local users as the company pushes the product beyond simple voice commands and into fuller personal-assistant territory. Australian customers can now register for Early Access, with invitations due to be sent out over the next few weeks, according to Amazon’s announcement and reporting from Craving Tech.
The new service is built around generative AI and large language models, which lets it handle more natural, back-and-forth conversation and carry context across devices. Amazon says Alexa+ can do more than answer questions: it can help book restaurants, manage calendars, track orders, organise home automation and make shopping easier. The company has also said the assistant is designed to work across Echo devices and Fire TV, with browser access coming later through Alexa.com.au.
Amazon is also localising the product for Australian use. According to the company, Alexa+ has been trained to understand Australian accents, regional slang and local references, and it draws from local content sources including ABC, News24, The Guardian, AAP and Reuters. It also supports Spotify and Apple Music alongside Amazon Music. The company says the assistant can recognise individual voices and faces and adapt to household preferences over time.
Privacy remains a central part of Amazon’s pitch. The Alexa Privacy Dashboard lets users review what Alexa heard, manage voice recordings and control how long data is stored, Amazon says. Physical camera controls and visual indicators on Echo devices remain in place, while the company says the privacy tools are intended to give users more direct control over their interactions.
Pricing follows a mixed model. Alexa+ will be free for Prime members once Early Access ends, while eligible Amazon customers can use it free during the preview period. Non-Prime users will pay AU$29.99 a month. Existing Echo owners can register interest, while buyers of a new compatible device can opt in immediately. Amazon says more than 98% of its existing Alexa customers in Australia already have compatible hardware, and it is positioning the new Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio as the best-fit devices for the upgraded assistant.
