Apple is set to overhaul its smart home ecosystem with refreshed hardware, a dedicated display-based hub, and AI-driven features, signalling a shift from incremental updates to a comprehensive home platform.
Apple is preparing a broader move into the smart home, with a refreshed HomePod mini, an updated Apple TV 4K, a new display-based hub and later security devices all said to be in development, according to reporting summarised by 9to5Mac. The plans suggest a shift from isolated hardware updates towards a more complete home platform, with Siri’s long-promised AI upgrades seen as central to that effort.
The first products expected to arrive are revised versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K, likely later this year. What changes is less about design than capability: the HomePod mini is rumoured to move from Apple’s S5 chip to an S9, while the Apple TV 4K could gain an A17 Pro processor. That would give the set-top box more headroom for on-device intelligence features, while Apple may also revisit the remote. Current pricing stands at $129 for the HomePod mini and $199 for the Apple TV 4K, and the report says Apple may keep those price points.
Apple’s more ambitious step is a dedicated smart-home hub, reportedly codenamed “HomePad”. The device is said to be under consideration in two forms: a wall-mounted display and a speaker-style unit closer to Google’s Nest Hub. It could feature a 7-inch square screen, run a new operating system internally referred to as homeOS, and use an A18 chip. The hub would reportedly support FaceTime, smart-home controls and Siri AI, with launch timing somewhere between October and early 2027.
The wider roadmap also includes a larger HomePod, plus Apple’s first security camera and smart doorbell. Apple introduced the current HomePod in January 2023 with multi-room audio, stereo pairing, temperature and humidity sensing, and sound recognition for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, while HomePod software updates have since expanded Siri, AirPlay and home automation features. If Apple’s next wave arrives as reported, the company will be moving from incremental speaker updates towards a deeper challenge to established smart-home ecosystems.
