Apple's bold new push into the smart home market signals disruption and competition

Apple prepares to expand its smart home offerings with new audio, display, security devices, and a dedicated home hub, challenging Google and Amazon’s dominance in connected-home tech.

Apple is reported to be preparing its broadest push yet into the connected-home market, with new audio, streaming and display hardware said to be on the way. According to 9to5Mac, the company’s next wave could move it into closer competition with Google and Amazon, which already have a stronger presence in smart speakers, hubs and home monitoring.

The first products expected are refreshed versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K. MacRumors reports that the HomePod mini may gain Apple’s S9 chip, better wireless connectivity and new colour options, while the Apple TV 4K could shift to the A17 Pro chip, opening the door to some Apple Intelligence features. Both devices are said to keep their current US prices of $129 and $199.

More significant, however, is an apparently new smart home hub internally referred to as HomePad. The report says Apple is weighing two designs: one mounted to a surface and another closer in form to Google’s Nest Hub. It is said to run a new homeOS, use a 7-inch square display and an A18 chip, and include FaceTime calling, smart-home controls and Siri AI. The expected launch window is reportedly between October and early 2027.

Apple is also said to be developing its first security camera and smart doorbell, marking an expansion into categories long dominated by Amazon and Google. A full-size HomePod refresh is also reportedly in development, while Macworld has separately described plans for a larger 9-inch display hub on a robotic arm, suggesting Apple is considering a more ambitious premium product for the connected home.
