Arlo launches solar-assisted security camera to reduce maintenance and extend outdoor coverage

Arlo introduces the Essential Solar Security Camera, a low-maintenance, solar-powered outdoor monitoring solution with up to six months of battery life, aiming to revolutionise home surveillance with sustainable technology.

Arlo has added a solar-assisted model to its home security range, pitching it as a lower-maintenance option for owners who want outdoor monitoring without frequent battery swaps. The Essential Solar Security Camera is priced at $99.99, is available to pre-order now and is due to ship in mid-October, according to the company’s product listing and launch announcement. Arlo says the camera is built around a built-in solar panel and a rechargeable battery, with the aim of reducing the need for routine charging while maintaining coverage around the home.

The company says the device can remain charged with as little as two hours of direct sunlight a day, and that a full battery can last for up to six months without sun. That claim is subject to the usual real-world variables, including recording settings, motion activity and weather conditions, so actual performance will depend heavily on placement and usage. The camera uses a 1.2W panel paired with a 14,790mAh battery, which Arlo presents as a way to keep it working through darker months as well as in brighter weather.

On the imaging side, the camera records in 2K at up to 24 frames per second and offers a 130-degree field of view, matching the specification that Arlo already uses across several of its Essential-branded cameras. It also includes an integrated white LED spotlight for colour night vision, two-way audio and a remotely triggered siren. Dual-band Wi-Fi is designed to connect to the stronger available network, and the unit carries an IP65 weather-resistance rating. Arlo says the camera is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and IFTTT, giving it a broad set of smart-home connections.

More advanced AI-based features, including Threat Assessment, Event Captions and Arlo Summary, are tied to the company’s Arlo Secure Early Warning System and therefore require a subscription. Arlo lists several plan tiers, but the launch material does not set out pricing or spell out exactly which features sit in each tier, so buyers will need to review the plan details before judging the ongoing cost. The new camera arrives alongside other recent Essential models from Arlo, including battery-powered alternatives with 2K video and, in some cases, discounted pricing on the company’s own site and retail partners.
