Smart Eco Home Systems, a Cyprus-based start-up founded by electrical and electronics engineer Alp Can Okumuş, is developing artificial intelligence-enabled home technology designed to keep working even when the internet goes down. The company says its aim is to build products that solve everyday problems on the island and then scale them into exportable technology for international markets.
According to the company’s description, the platform is being built around both hardware and software components, with patent applications in progress. It is intended to support next-generation communications infrastructure and is being designed for connection speeds of up to 10 Gbps. The hardware is also being engineered to reduce heat generated during AI operation, a practical concern as more processing is pushed into local devices.
The start-up’s approach places a strong emphasis on privacy and resilience. It says the system is meant to function offline, which would allow core functions to continue during internet outages. That design choice echoes a wider trend in the smart-home market, where some rivals are also promoting local processing and reduced dependence on cloud services to improve data sovereignty and reliability.
Smart Eco Home Systems is also positioning itself around ethical AI and compliance with the European Union’s AI Act principles. The company says data security is central to the platform design, which matters in a sector increasingly judged not just on convenience but on how transparently it handles user information.
The business is being developed within the METU KALTEV Incubation Programme, where Okumuş is receiving one-to-one mentoring from Fatih Al. That support is intended to help the company refine its technology, build a business model and prepare for international expansion. Its next major showcase will come at Web Summit Lisbon 2026, where it has been selected as a Featured Startup and will present its technology to investors, partners and sector figures in Portugal in November.
For Okumuş, the larger ambition is straightforward: to turn a Cyprus-born idea into a globally competitive technology brand. The company’s founders argue that the island should be seen not only as a market for imported devices but as a place capable of producing technology for export.
