Google has addressed a bug affecting users of Google Home on iOS, which caused smart lights from brands like Philips Hue and Tapo to activate without input, offering reassurance after reports surfaced on Reddit.
Google says it has fixed a glitch that caused some smart lights to switch on without anyone touching them, after iPhone and iPad users of Google Home reported the behaviour earlier this week. The fault appears to have affected devices from several brands, including Govee, Philips Hue and Tapo.
Reports first surfaced on Reddit, where users said the lights could turn on as soon as they opened the Google Home app on iOS. In some cases, turning them off was not enough, because they would come back on again seconds later. The pattern suggested the problem was limited to the iOS version of the app rather than the connected bulbs themselves.
Google later replied to the Reddit discussion through its official Google Nest Community account. “We resolved an issue that was causing some lights to turn on/off without user input,” the company said, while asking anyone still affected to report it. The original poster later said their system appeared to be working normally again.
Google has not said what caused the bug, and it remains unclear whether the failure was tied to the app, a backend service or a specific configuration in Home. Even so, the fix should reassure users who briefly found their smart lighting behaving as though it had a mind of its own.
