Google is set to replace its aging Google Assistant with the more advanced Gemini AI across Android devices, with the transition commencing in September 2026, signalling a major shift in voice technology.
Google is preparing to retire Google Assistant and replace it with Gemini across a range of supported devices, according to a report by Business Today Bazaar. The publication said users have already started receiving emails warning that the older voice assistant will be removed from mobile devices, with the rollout due to begin on 4 September 2026 and take place gradually rather than all at once.
The move will affect Android phones and tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, headsets that rely on Google Assistant, and vehicles using Android Auto. According to the report, cars with Google built-in will keep access to Assistant for now, but users will not be able to switch back once the older assistant disappears from their phone, tablet or paired device. Google is said to believe Gemini will offer a more capable experience as the company pushes ahead with the transition.
Other reports suggest the change is already being reflected in Android’s interface. Android Central reported that Google is replacing Google Assistant wording in settings with Gemini branding, including a renamed hands-free wake-up option in the Gemini app. That report said the visual changes do not alter the basic “Hey Google” behaviour yet, but they do show the company steadily moving away from the old Assistant identity.
There is also some inconsistency over timing. Android Central and PhoneArena have reported that Google Assistant could be phased out on Android Auto as early as March 2026, while TechEdT and TechRadar have noted delays and shifting deadlines as Google works through technical hurdles. The broader picture is that Google appears to be replacing a familiar but limited voice assistant with a more conversational AI system, even though Gemini still has some rough edges with simple tasks such as timers and quick commands.
