Havells introduces multilingual voice assistant to control Indian connected home devices naturally

Havells has launched a new conversational voice control feature in its Havells One app, enabling users to manage connected devices in English and seven Indian languages with natural speech, signalling a shift towards more intuitive smart home interfaces in India.

Havells has added a multilingual agentic voice layer to its Havells One app, giving users a way to control connected home devices by speaking naturally in English and seven Indian languages. The feature, now available to the app’s 2.67 million users, is built by Havells Center for Research & Innovation and uses ElevenLabs’ streaming speech-to-text and text-to-speech models as the voice interface, with Havells’ own conversational intelligence handling the device logic.

The rollout is designed to move beyond rigid voice commands. Havells said the system understands intent rather than fixed phrases, which matters in Indian households where speakers often mix languages within the same sentence. Supported languages include Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Gujarati and Malayalam, alongside English. A request such as “make the room comfortable” can trigger several devices at once, coordinating air conditioning, air purification, fan speed and lighting through different connectivity protocols.

The company said the assistant can also keep context across exchanges, ask for clarification when a request is unclear and explain device error codes in plain spoken language. That places the feature closer to a conversational agent than a traditional smart-home command system. Havells has also linked the capability to a wider range of products, including fans, air purifiers, water purifiers and water heaters, as well as Lloyd air conditioners and washing machines, Crabtree smart switches and future smart-home devices.

Havells said it assessed voice AI options on recognition accuracy, multilingual coverage, latency and synthesis quality before selecting ElevenLabs. The company added that its CRI team moved the system into production in roughly six weeks, with support from ElevenLabs’ Forward Deployed Engineering team on voice quality and regional pronunciation. Havells now plans to extend the feature to more Indian languages, add personalisation for individual household members and broaden voice functions into product FAQs, troubleshooting and scheduling.
