JBL announces its Cove series, a new line of Wi-Fi speakers designed for whole-home audio, offering automatic tuning, Dolby Atmos support, and seamless multi-room integration to rival Sonos.
JBL has unveiled Cove, a new Wi-Fi speaker range aimed at whole-home audio and pitched directly against Sonos. The series is built around three models, each intended for a different room size and use case, with JBL stressing straightforward set-up, room-based listening and automatic tuning rather than a more complex home cinema installation.
At the entry point is the Cove M1, a compact speaker for everyday use. The Cove P1 adds portability, with a battery rated for up to 14 hours, a charging dock and IP56 protection against dust and splashes. At the top sits the Cove X1, the flagship model, which JBL says uses four tweeters and two woofers for a broader soundstage.
According to JBL, Dolby Atmos is supported on the P1 and X1, while all three speakers share the company’s Constant Sound Field technology, automatic room calibration and AI Sound Boost processing to reduce distortion at higher volumes. The speakers can be used on their own, paired in stereo or grouped across multiple rooms. JBL also says the range is designed to integrate with its Bar MK2 soundbar series, letting compatible Cove speakers act as rear channels through the JBL One app for a fuller Dolby Atmos setup.
The company is also pushing convenience features. Music Follows Me allows playback to be moved from room to room with a button press, without opening an app, and JBL says set-up can be completed in three steps. The range supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect, with high-resolution audio support. JBL has also said Alexa+ compatibility will arrive later through an update in the United States, leaving that function unavailable in France for now.
Pricing puts the Cove range close to Sonos. JBL says the M1 will cost €229.99, the P1 €449.99 and the X1 €499.99, with black and white finishes available. That places the M1 against the Sonos Era 100, while the X1 comes into the same territory as the Dolby Atmos-capable Era 300.
