OpenAI set to launch disruptive compact AI speaker with personalisation and sensors in 2027

OpenAI is developing a small, AI-powered smart speaker with advanced sensors, personalised AI models, and a sleek design created in collaboration with Jony Ive, expected to arrive in 2027, signalling a new direction in home AI devices.

OpenAI is preparing a compact smart speaker that would blur the line between a home assistant and a personal AI computer, according to reporting from Bloomberg cited by Russian tech site RB.RU and later coverage in MacRumors, WinBuzzer, TechBriefly and 9to5Google. The device is said to be part of OpenAI’s wider push into consumer hardware and is currently targeted for release in 2027.

The product is expected to be small enough to hold in one hand, with a rounded form that multiple reports have compared to a hockey puck or a doughnut. Bloomberg’s reporting says the casing will include cameras, microphones and other sensors, while moving parts and light signals are designed to make the device feel more responsive and lifelike. OpenAI is developing the design with LoveFrom, the studio founded by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive.

The device is also expected to rely on more advanced models than the current voice mode in ChatGPT, allowing it to handle more natural conversation and adapt to the owner over time. According to the reports, OpenAI wants the speaker to function throughout the day, recognising the user and tailoring responses more closely to personal habits and context. Other reports say it may also be able to control smart-home devices and identify people or objects through its camera.

Pricing remains inconsistent across the reporting. RB.RU says OpenAI is aiming for a retail price of $300 to $400, while several other outlets have put the target range at $200 to $300. Either way, the device would sit above most mainstream smart speakers. The reports suggest OpenAI sees it not just as a voice assistant but as the first product in a broader hardware family, potentially including smart glasses and a smart lamp.
