The device is said to be about the size of a hockey puck and designed to be carried from room to room, with moving parts intended to make it feel more responsive and alive. It is expected to include a camera and sensors to read its surroundings, but no display.
The reported price is likely to be one of the biggest tests for the company’s hardware ambitions. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said the speaker is being discussed at a price of $300 to $400, while The Information and other outlets have previously reported a lower range of $200 to $300. That would still place it well above most mainstream smart speakers and suggests OpenAI is aiming for a premium product rather than a mass-market assistant.
The device is expected to arrive in 2027, and it is only one part of a broader hardware push. The Information has reported that OpenAI is developing a family of AI devices, including smart glasses and a smart lamp, and that its hardware team now numbers more than 200 people. Those reports also said the first product would use a camera to understand its environment and could support features such as facial recognition for purchases. OpenAI’s move into hardware follows its $6.5 billion purchase of Jony Ive’s startup io, a deal intended to accelerate the company’s consumer device plans.
