Samsung begins staged rollout of redesigned SmartThings app ahead of Android release

Samsung’s new SmartThings app, adopting a lighter interface and enhanced features, is rolling out first to iPhone users, signalling a significant update ahead of Android availability and a phased deployment across devices.

Samsung has begun rolling out a substantial redesign of SmartThings, its app for managing connected home devices, with iPhone users receiving the new version before Galaxy owners. According to Android Authority and reports from SamMobile, version 1.7.51 is already live on the App Store, while the Android release has yet to arrive. For Samsung, the timing is notable: SmartThings has lagged behind the company’s newer One UI design language, even though it remains central to controlling appliances, televisions and other smart home products.

The refreshed interface appears to move SmartThings towards a lighter, more compact layout. SamMobile says the update adopts a Liquid Glass-style visual treatment, with a floating navigation bar and redesigned home-screen cards that surface summaries rather than burying key information in menus. The Mac Observer reported that the Home tab now includes a dynamic summary card showing details such as energy use and suggested automations, which should make the app more useful at a glance.

Samsung has also adjusted the TV control experience. According to SamMobile, the virtual remote now has a dedicated Light Mode and can be moved on screen, while the Mac Observer noted that the control layout is intended to be easier to use one-handed. These changes point to a broader effort to make SmartThings less cluttered and more practical for everyday control, especially on larger phones.

The redesign is not yet complete. SamMobile said deeper device plugin pages still use the older interface, suggesting Samsung is releasing the new design in stages rather than as a single overhaul. PhoneArena reported that the wider update is organised around five main sections , Favorites, Devices, Life, Automations and Menu , and that Samsung is positioning the app as both a control hub and a discovery layer for connected home features. Separately, Samsung has already signalled that SmartThings support will end for iPhones running iOS 16 or earlier from 23 December 2025, limiting reinstall options on older devices unless they are updated to iOS 17 or later.
