Shelly Group introduces the Shelly Camera, a versatile indoor device designed to integrate seamlessly into smart home systems, emphasising local AI processing and user control without mandatory cloud subscriptions.
Shelly Group has expanded beyond lighting and energy control with the launch of Shelly Camera, a compact indoor device aimed at homes, apartments, offices and smaller commercial sites. The product is positioned less as a conventional stand-alone camera than as part of a wider automation system, where video events can trigger actions across connected Shelly devices. According to Shelly, that approach is intended to make monitoring more useful for everyday routines as well as security.
The camera records in Full HD 1080p and offers a 110-degree horizontal and 70-degree vertical field of view, which should be enough to cover a typical room without extensive repositioning. It also includes black-and-white night vision for low-light monitoring. Shelly says motion detection can activate local automations without a cloud subscription, allowing users to switch on lights, control relays or launch other predefined responses when activity is detected.
Storage and viewing options are deliberately flexible. Users can watch a live stream without saving footage, record locally to a microSD card, or choose Shelly Cloud for online storage. The company is also offering three months of Shelly Cloud with each camera, while cloud-based storage remains optional rather than mandatory. Shelly says the device supports local AI models on compatible hardware, which may appeal to advanced users building fully local smart-home systems.
Integration is a central part of the pitch. The camera supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth setup, MQTT, WebSocket and WebRTC, and is compatible with Home Assistant, Frigate NVR, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. It also includes a microphone and speaker for two-way audio, and it can be mounted on a wall or ceiling or placed on a shelf or desk. Powered by USB-C, it ships with a two-metre cable and mounting plate.
Shelly is also using the launch to push a broader privacy and control message. Because automations can run locally, the company argues that responses are faster and less dependent on external services. In practice, that could suit users who want a camera for entrances, garages, pets, children, holiday homes or small business premises, but do not want to commit to an ongoing subscription simply to use the hardware. The device is available in black and white, carries a two-year warranty and is priced at £37.90, €39.90 or $49.99.
