SimpliSafe has launched the Video Doorbell Series 2, introducing AI-based detection and live intervention features to shift home security from passive recording to active deterrence, priced at $199.99.
SimpliSafe has added a new video doorbell to its home security line-up, pitching the device as a front-line deterrent rather than a passive recorder. The Video Doorbell Series 2 brings 2K resolution, a head-to-toe view and AI-based detection, with the option to involve live, US-based monitoring agents when the doorbell is used alongside the company’s Active Guard Outdoor Protection service, according to SimpliSafe.
The company says the system is designed to identify people, parcels and, later, vehicles, then alert trained agents who can view the feed, use two-way audio and trigger the siren in an effort to discourage intruders before anything escalates. That approach reflects a wider shift in the home security market towards intervention, not just evidence gathering. SimpliSafe also says the new model supports up to five seconds of pre-event recording, dual-band Wi-Fi and configurable activity zones so users can ignore routine street activity.
Rebecca Zavin, SimpliSafe’s chief product and technology officer, said the company wanted a doorbell that did more than record events after the fact. The new device also adds privacy controls through the app, including optional familiar-face libraries for certain monitoring plans, though that feature is restricted in some regions and face-matching is disabled where required, with agents manually checking for matches, according to the company.
Pricing places the doorbell in the mid-range of the category at $199.99, while the live intervention layer sits behind SimpliSafe’s higher monitoring tiers. Independent reviews of the company’s earlier outdoor camera products have praised quick installation, broad viewing angles and useful two-way audio, but they have also noted the limits of subscription-dependent features, the absence of local storage and the cost of active monitoring. Those trade-offs are likely to remain central for buyers considering whether SimpliSafe’s deterrence-led model justifies the recurring fee.
