Google users who believe their devices captured audio without a wake word have only a short window left to seek money from a $68 million settlement. Reuters-style reporting from TopClassActions and TechRepublic says Alphabet’s Google agreed to the deal in June after allegations that Google Assistant recorded communications without intentional activation, while denying any wrongdoing.
The settlement covers people in the United States and its territories who, between 18 May 2016 and 19 March 2026, used a Google-made device or had communications recorded by Google Assistant in connection with the alleged privacy breach. The FAQ for the case says eligible hardware includes Google Home, Home Mini, Home Max, Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. TechRepublic says claims can be submitted online or by post, and that proof of purchase may be required for device owners.
The claims process uses a points system rather than a fixed award. According to the settlement materials, compensation will be divided proportionately according to the number of points each claimant receives. Coverage site TopClassActions estimates that individual payouts could land somewhere between $2 and $56, while another settlement tracker places typical device-owner payments closer to $18 to $56, depending on the claim category and the number of valid submissions.
The deadline to file is Thursday, 27 August 2026, making the case urgent for anyone who thinks they qualify. Dapeer’s settlement summary says the final fairness hearing is set for 1 October 2026, and notes that the fund is non-reversionary, meaning any money left after fees, service awards and administration costs will still be distributed to class members rather than returned to Google.
