1Password 8.12.30 adds a local MCP server in the Developer tab, extending the password manager’s reach into agentic AI workflows by letting assistants access 1Password Developer tools on the user’s device. The update is broadly available across the company’s desktop and mobile products, with release notes on Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and the browser extension all reflecting the same core addition, alongside further language support work.
The change is notable because MCP, or the Model Context Protocol, is designed to let AI systems connect to external tools in a more structured way. In practical terms, 1Password is positioning its Developer tab as a bridge between stored credentials and automated development tasks, while keeping the server local rather than pushing that access through a remote service. The move follows a wider trend among software vendors to expose controlled, device-side integrations for AI assistants rather than relying only on copy-and-paste workflows.
Alongside the MCP feature, 1Password says the release improves localisation for several supported languages and addresses a series of smaller product issues. On Mac and Linux, the company says it has also refined plaintext secret scanning, including detection of “.env” files and SSH keys. On iOS, it fixed a problem where edits to the pre-filled Secret Key were not saved when adding an account from the Found Accounts list. Other fixes include clearer screen-reader labelling for the “Clear keyboard shortcut” control, a location display of “Unknown location” when sign-in location data cannot be determined, and a bug where dragging files to the sidebar could leave destinations highlighted. Windows users also gain a fix for Environment destinations that could fail to load.
