Android Auto 18.0 lays groundwork for Google’s Cielo redesign

Google is rolling out Android Auto 18.0 to production users, with code pointing to an upcoming Cielo overhaul featuring in-dashboard widgets, wider app support and parked-car video playback.

Google has begun rolling out Android Auto 18.0 to production users, moving the build beyond the beta channel and into staged distribution through the Play Store. The release is not a visible overhaul, but it appears to mark an important step in the groundwork for larger changes that Google has been preparing for the in-car platform.

Despite the version jump, the update is modest on the surface. There are no obvious interface changes in Android Auto 18.0, yet code changes inside the build point to newer features under active development. The most notable sign is the first reference to Google’s long-awaited Cielo project, which had been expected since the spring and is understood to combine a redesigned layout with new functionality.

Cielo is expected to make room for widgets inside Android Auto, but in a different way from Apple’s CarPlay approach. Rather than moving widgets to a separate panel, Google appears to be preparing a side-by-side arrangement that keeps them within the main interface. The aim is to support widgets from apps already on the connected phone, such as calendar and weather tools, with limited or no additional work from developers. That would fit Google’s broader push to make the transition from Android phones to Android Auto feel more seamless.

The same overhaul is also expected to widen app support, including video apps. YouTube is likely to lead that change, though Google is planning safeguards so playback is limited to parked vehicles. An audio-only mode is also in development, allowing a video to continue as sound once the car starts moving. That would reduce interruption while avoiding the distraction of on-screen video in motion. Google has not confirmed a launch date, but the original target was before the end of the year; based on the current pace, a first-quarter 2027 rollout now appears more plausible. The build number for this release is Android Auto 18.0.6642.
