Despite increasing competition, Android continues to offer users more freedom to personalise and control their devices, maintaining its edge over iOS with features like app sideloading, extensive customisation, and direct file management.
Android still offers users more room to shape their phones than iOS, and that remains its defining advantage. In a recent MakeUseOf column, Abhijit N. Arjunan argued that the platform gives owners far greater control over what they install, how the interface looks, and how they manage their devices. That basic difference still separates Google’s system from Apple’s tightly controlled model.
One of Android’s clearest benefits is software freedom. Users can install apps from Google Play, but also from third-party stores and other unofficial sources, which makes the platform more open than iPhone software. Arjunan noted that Google does restrict some apps that conflict with its interests, yet the option to sideload software remains a major draw for people who want choice beyond a single app marketplace.
Customisation is another area where Android keeps its lead. According to the same MakeUseOf analysis, owners can alter icon sets, resize widgets, adjust animations and tune notification behaviour in ways that are still far more limited on iOS. TechRadar’s recent comparison of Android and iPhone also found that users frequently cite this flexibility, along with broader hardware choice and easier file handling, as reasons for preferring Android.
Android’s openness also extends to the file system. Arjunan said users can browse and move files directly without the workarounds often needed on iPhones, making the platform more practical for people who regularly handle documents and media. That flexibility does not make Android superior in every respect, however. Security remains more nuanced: TechRadar has pointed to strong protections on both platforms, while a Google-backed study reported that Android phones, especially Pixels, now outperform iPhones at blocking scam messages. Google has also claimed Android delivers faster web browsing performance in its LoadLine benchmark, underlining that the platform’s advantages are not limited to customisation alone.
