Aphera, a newly introduced RAW editing app designed specifically for macOS on Apple Silicon, promises faster, non-destructive editing with a focus on speed, handcrafted looks, and custom imaging workflows, aiming to appeal to photographers craving tactile control over their editing process.
Aphera is entering a crowded RAW editing market with a clear pitch: less friction, more intent. Built natively for macOS and limited to Apple Silicon, the software is aimed at photographers who want fast, non-destructive editing without the weight of a traditional all-in-one digital darkroom. Its creators say the app was designed around speed, handcrafted looks and a custom imaging pipeline rather than preset-heavy workflows.
The company behind it, Latent Co, is led by Ryan Carver, Naz Hamid and Juan Pablo Zambrano. According to PetaPixel, Carver and Hamid both have extensive histories in imaging, including work at VSCO, while Zambrano brings colour engineering and software development experience. That background matters because Aphera is being positioned not as a general consumer editor, but as a tool shaped by practitioners who became dissatisfied with what they saw as the complexity of modern RAW software.
Latent Co says the app can handle real-time editing of 100MP RAW files and supports a keyboard-driven workflow, culling, bulk adjustments, project-based organisation and export to multiple formats. The application also includes profiles for hundreds of camera and lens combinations and offers film-inspired colour rendering informed by modern colour science and professional cinema-style grading. In practical terms, the promise is a faster path from capture to finished image, with fewer menu-driven interruptions.
The launch also places Aphera in direct comparison with Adobe Lightroom, even though the developers are careful to distance it from that framing. “We’re our own things,” they say. That stance reflects a wider trend in photo software: some photographers want fewer automation layers and more tactile control, while others still prefer the broad ecosystem and organisational depth of established platforms. Aphera appears to be targeting the first group.
The app is on sale now as a lifetime licence. Latent Co is offering a 50% launch discount through 31 August 2026, reducing the price from $199 to $99. Buyers get updates for one year, after which continued updates require a $99 annual subscription. A 14-day trial is also available, giving photographers a way to test whether Aphera’s stripped-back approach suits their workflow.
