Apple has integrated Alibaba’s Qianwen AI model into its devices in China, marking a strategic shift to better navigate local regulations and compete with Chinese rivals like Huawei and Vivo, amid rising adoption of local AI models.
Apple has moved to formalise a long-anticipated deal with Alibaba, integrating the Chinese company’s Qianwen artificial intelligence model into its devices in China, according to reporting from GuruFocus and earlier coverage by TechCrunch and other outlets. The arrangement gives Apple a locally compliant AI partner at a time when its broader Apple Intelligence platform is being pushed into one of the world’s most tightly regulated technology markets.
The move is significant because Apple Intelligence has already received approval for launch in China, with the Alibaba partnership forming part of the conditions for that rollout, TechCrunch reported. The integration is expected to extend across iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS, allowing Apple to offer AI functions that are tailored to local rules and language needs rather than relying solely on its own models or non-Chinese providers.
According to Alibaba, Qwen will be embedded in Apple’s AI services to support text and image understanding for users in China. The broader competitive backdrop is also shifting. The South China Morning Post has reported that Chinese smartphone makers, including Huawei and Vivo, are increasingly turning to DeepSeek’s AI models, underlining how Apple is entering a market where rivals are already moving quickly to local AI systems.
For Apple, the agreement reflects a wider change in strategy. Rather than keeping every layer of intelligence in-house, the company appears to be building a supply chain for AI that combines its hardware, software and external models where regulation or product needs require it. That could strengthen features such as Siri and writing tools for Chinese users, while also helping Apple defend its position in its second-largest market.
