Apple is nearing the release of two late-stage iOS updates emphasising security and stability, ahead of the fall launch of iOS 27 and new iPhone models, with builds already in testing for both current and legacy devices.
Apple is nearing the release of iOS 26.6.1 and iOS 18.7.10, two late-stage iPhone updates that appear to be centred on security, stability and small reliability fixes. According to The Mac Observer, release candidate builds have already been distributed, which usually means the software is close to public launch unless Apple finds a final fault that needs to be corrected.
The newer branch, iOS 26.6.1, has been assigned build number 23G82, while iOS 18.7.10 carries build 22H373. Apple has not signalled any major new features for either update. Instead, the expected changes point to patched vulnerabilities, bug fixes and compatibility improvements for apps and Apple services. Apple’s public security documentation still shows iOS 26.6 as the latest general release, after it arrived on 27 July.
The timing also reflects Apple’s wider software transition. MacRumors reported that iOS 26.6 includes security fixes and Spotlight index changes intended to prepare devices for iOS 27, which is expected in September alongside new iPhone models. Its security support document says the update addresses issues in components including ImageIO, IOKit and the kernel, underlining that this stage of the cycle is focused on tightening the platform rather than adding visible features.
Apple’s continued work on iOS 18.7.10 also serves older supported devices and users who have not moved to the newer operating system. Support material for iOS 18.7 shows Apple has already been issuing security updates in that branch, including fixes for audio-processing issues that could cause unexpected app termination or memory corruption. Taken together, the two update tracks suggest Apple is keeping both the current and legacy branches aligned on security as it finishes work on the next major iPhone release.
