The distinction now depends on memory as much as chip generation, with Apple reserving its most advanced on-device model for devices with at least 12GB of unified memory. The base iPhone 17 has 8GB, which is enough for the standard Apple Intelligence experience but not for the higher tier.
That higher tier matters because Apple has tied two Siri functions to it: more expressive voices and more advanced dictation. Those features are limited to the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, along with select iPads and Macs that meet the same memory threshold. Apple Vision Pro with M5 also qualifies, although the dictation feature is not clearly listed for that device in Apple’s own footnote, suggesting the company is applying the limit feature by feature rather than by broad product category.
The shift is notable because Apple Intelligence had previously used 8GB as the baseline across supported hardware. The iPhone 16 Pro, despite being a former flagship, also falls short of the new requirement. That means Apple’s newest software split is not simply between old and new devices, but between models that can run Apple Intelligence generally and those that can run its most capable local AI model.
For buyers, the practical impact is narrow but real. A base iPhone 17 owner still gets the broader Apple Intelligence toolset, including Siri’s conversational features and on-screen awareness. What is missing is the extra layer Apple has attached to the more powerful model. Whether Apple will eventually add more features to that tier remains unclear, but iOS 27 marks the first time the company has set a memory gate inside Apple Intelligence itself.
