Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 update integrates deeper AI-driven enhancements into core apps and introduces practical features aimed at simplifying daily tasks, signalling a significant shift towards more intuitive user experiences.
Apple’s next iPhone software update appears set to push Apple Intelligence deeper into everyday tasks, while also refining core apps that many users open without thinking. According to MacWorld’s report on iOS 27, the release combines headline AI changes with smaller but practical improvements in Safari, Photos, Messages, Passwords, Wallet, Weather, Maps and other parts of the system.
Safari is one of the clearest examples of that approach. MacRumors says iOS 27 will add automatic tab grouping by topic, making it easier to keep related pages together, while a new “Notify Me” function will watch webpages for changes such as price drops or items returning to stock. The browser is also expected to gain a natural-language way to build custom extensions, lowering the technical barrier for users who want tailored tools.
Photos is also due for a substantial upgrade. Apple is planning more advanced editing features, including “Reframe” for adjusting composition and perspective, and “Extend” for generating extra image content when a picture needs to be widened or straightened. The Clean Up tool is being improved too, with Fast and High Quality modes. The higher-quality option should produce more natural results, although more ambitious edits may still create distortions or invented details, according to the MacWorld summary.
Apple is also broadening the Camera app’s controls. The redesign is expected to let users pin frequently used settings, while a more advanced set of controls is being prepared for the iPhone 18 Pro, including white balance, shutter speed and manual focus. MacWorld also says Apple is adding Apple Reference Image, a verification system intended to help prove that a photo or video was genuinely captured on an iPhone and has not been altered afterwards.
Messages is set to become more flexible as well. Users will be able to decide what the microphone button beside the text field does, choosing between audio recording, dictation or no action at all. Apple Intelligence will also suggest follow-up actions from a conversation, such as setting a reminder, creating a note or locating relevant photos, while reply suggestions are being tuned to better match a user’s writing style. A separate Drawing app is expected to replace the old hidden handwriting tool and send sketches as images.
Mail and Phone are being tied together more closely. Apple Intelligence will be able to surface details from emails in other apps, such as a flight confirmation number when a user calls an airline. Phone’s new Call Context feature is designed to show information based on who is being called, rather than by analysing the conversation itself. MacWorld says that could also surface birthday reminders when a contact with a stored birthday is dialled.
FaceTime, Passwords and Shortcuts are also on Apple’s list. FaceTime is set to gain Dual Capture, allowing front and rear cameras to be used at once. Passwords is being upgraded so it can not only flag weak, reused or compromised credentials, but also, on supported sites, update them automatically with Apple Intelligence. Shortcuts will gain a Describe a Shortcut feature, letting users build automations by describing what they want in plain language.
Elsewhere, Calendar is due to become more conversational, with Apple saying it can recognise contacts, locations and dates from typed instructions. Image Playground is being expanded with more realistic generation, object editing and a SynthID watermark for synthetic images. Wallet can create custom passes from QR codes, Weather is getting a clearer forecast layout, and the Home app will use Apple Intelligence to group camera alerts and summarise notable clips from compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras.
Apple Maps, Podcasts and Fitness are also being updated. MacRumors reports that Maps will improve Flyover with higher-quality aerial imagery and more realistic detail, while Podcasts will make it easier to switch between watching and listening to video shows. Fitness summaries are being redesigned for easier sharing, and completed Fitness+ workouts can be hidden. Taken together, the changes suggest Apple is trying to make iOS more useful in small, recurring tasks as well as in the bigger AI features likely to define the next release.
