Apple’s Siri transforms into a proactive, on-device messaging assistant in iOS 27 beta

The latest Siri overhaul in iOS 27 introduces automated, context-aware messaging features that could redefine how users interact with their devices, blending AI reasoning with personal data for seamless communication.

Apple’s new Siri overhaul is turning the assistant from a basic voice helper into something closer to an on-device agent, and one of the clearest examples is messaging. According to Macworld’s hands-on account, the system can now draft replies, pull in context from the chat and even send responses automatically in some cases, a sharp shift for a feature that once mostly handled reminders, timers and simple searches.

The feature depends on Apple’s latest hardware and software. MacRumors says the upgraded Siri experience in iOS 27 requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later and is available first in beta, with a broader public release expected this autumn. The same reporting says Apple has tied the assistant more closely to personal data across apps such as Mail, Messages and Photos, giving it enough context to reason about what a user is asking and what information is likely relevant.

In practice, that means Siri can now do more than generate a generic response. Macworld found that when a contact asked for game suggestions, the assistant searched the web and composed a reply with current recommendations. In another example, it inferred that a question about iCloud+ pricing should be answered with country-specific details based on a contact’s location shown in the chat, a sign that the assistant is drawing on both public information and personal context.

Apple’s Shortcuts app is central to the more automated use case. Macworld describes a natural-language prompt that creates a rule for a chosen contact: when they message, Siri analyses the text, generates a suitable reply and sends it without further approval. That approach appears to work best with iMessage rather than third-party chat apps. It also raises a practical concern: automated replies may be useful, but they can also produce awkward or incorrect messages if users do not monitor them closely.

MacRumors adds that Apple has extended Siri into a dedicated app in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS, with conversation history synced through iCloud and support initially limited to English. The broader direction is clear. Apple is building Siri into a more persistent, cross-device assistant that can search, reason and act across apps. For messaging, that may save time. It may also force users to decide how much of their conversations they are willing to hand over to software.
