Avid’s latest update to Media Composer 2026.8 features ‘agentic editing’, AI-enabled tools, and expanded shared workflows, signalling a shift towards enterprise-scale video editing solutions.
Avid has unveiled Media Composer 2026.8, a release built around what the company describes as “agentic editing” and a new “Ready to Edit” workflow intended to speed up preparation without removing editorial control. The update also tightens the link between Media Composer and Avid Content Core, letting editors search and pull from a wider media archive inside the application, while a new Google Gemini panel brings embedded AI functions into the interface. Avid says the software will be available from 1 September.
The new version also expands shared working options. According to Avid, Shared Projects now allow post-production teams to move more easily between locations and storage systems, with a broader collaboration model aimed at larger and more distributed workflows. News of the release, which Avid positioned for IBC 2026, comes as the company continues to push Media Composer further towards enterprise-scale use rather than treating it purely as a standalone editing tool.
Among the practical additions is PhraseFindAI Multicam Auto Cut, which uses speaker detection and speech boundaries to automate multicam selection while keeping edits adjustable. Avid has also added transcript tools for reverting changes, splitting segments and maintaining continuous playback in the viewer, alongside an updated OpenTimelineIO 2.0 adapter designed to improve interoperability with third-party applications. Other changes include a new What’s New window, better bin column search, audio track swapping from subclips, Titler+ keyframe rectification and broader API support for automation and integration.
The release also brings a more capable free entry point through Media Composer First, which Avid says is intended for aspiring editors and students. At the same time, the update carries important implications for facilities using shared storage. Avid’s knowledge base says Media Composer 2026.8 closes an unsupported storage-emulation path that some third-party systems have used for bin sharing and locking, and directs customers needing supported third-party workflows towards Media Composer Enterprise. For teams on Avid NEXIS, the company says the client should be on version 2026.6 or later.
