A widespread Windows 11 bug caused by driver conflicts impacted over 245 Dell models across various series, leading to shutdowns and overheating. The issue, linked to updates in June and July, has now been remedied through an emergency patch from Microsoft.
Dell has now published the full scope of a Windows 11 compatibility problem that affected far more PCs than first reported, with roughly 245 models across its consumer, business, gaming and workstation lines exposed to shutdowns, overheating, slower performance and battery drain. Microsoft said the issue has already been fixed by an out-of-band update, but Dell’s internal guidance makes clear how widely the bug spread across its portfolio.
The problem began after Microsoft’s optional Windows 11 update on June 23, identified as KB5095093, and worsened after the mandatory Patch Tuesday release on July 14, KB5101650. According to Microsoft and Dell, the fault lay in a clash between the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver and a new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface introduced in the June and July updates. Microsoft said affected devices could experience unexpected shutdowns, poor performance, higher temperatures and faster battery drain.
Microsoft first blocked the July 14 update on some Dell PCs after reports of serious instability, while the earlier optional update was not stopped immediately. The company later released KB5121767 on July 18 as an emergency out-of-band patch for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. PCWorld and Windows Central reported that the update was designed to restore stability and lift the block on the security release for affected systems.
Windows Latest previously identified only a small set of impacted machines, largely higher-end professional models such as the Dell Pro Max and Precision lines, plus some XPS systems. Dell’s later list shows the issue was broader, extending to Alienware, Inspiron, Latitude, OptiPlex, Vostro and multiple Dell Pro and XPS families. The company said the affected devices should be running Build 26200.8894 or Build 26100.8894, or a newer version, to avoid the bug.
The episode underlines how a driver-level incompatibility can ripple across a large PC fleet before it is contained. Dell says its hardware uses the Intel driver for power and thermal management and, on some enterprise systems, presence detection features such as Wake on Approach and Walk away Lock. For users who installed the June or July updates and then saw instability, the immediate remedy is the patched Windows build rather than further manual changes.
