Google is limiting free access to its Gemini chatbot, requiring users to upgrade to paid plans for more advanced features and capabilities, marking a significant shift in its AI service strategy.
Google is narrowing free access to its Gemini chatbot, a move that will push more users towards paid plans and reduce the capabilities available to those on the no-cost tier. According to Google’s support information, from 9 October free accounts will be limited to Flash-Lite, the company’s smallest and most economical model, while Flash and Pro will no longer be available without a subscription.
The change matters because those higher-end models are designed for more demanding work. Google has described Pro as better suited to advanced reasoning, coding, and tasks that require a broader understanding of text, files, images and video. For users who have relied on Gemini as a study aid, coding assistant or document analyser, the new limits may make the free version far less useful for complex queries.
The tightening also reaches some paying customers. Google’s AI Plus tier, which costs $5 a month in the US, will lose access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, meaning subscribers who want that model will need to move to the AI Pro plan, priced at $20 a month. At the top end, AI Ultra users will continue to receive the broadest access, including the new Deep Think option for more intensive reasoning, and they will be first in line for Gemini 4 Argon once it reaches general availability. Notebookcheck reported that some users have already been told about the AI Plus change by email.
Google is also adding effort controls across its models, allowing users to select low, medium or high settings. The higher the setting, the more detailed the response should be, but it will also consume more of a user’s allowance. In practice, that gives Google another way to ration usage while offering a choice between speed and depth. Zeniteq said the changes apply to Gemini Apps on personal accounts, while the Gemini API and AI Studio continue under separate access and billing arrangements.
