Google’s Gemini AI assistant hits a major milestone of over 1 billion monthly users, with increasing voice interactions and expanded automation features, signalling a shift towards more conversational and integrated AI services.
Google said this week that its Gemini app has passed 1 billion monthly users, marking a major audience milestone for the company’s flagship AI assistant. In the same update, the company said 63% of users now interact with Gemini through voice, underlining its push towards more conversational use rather than text-only prompting.
The figures were published in a blog post on August 11 and repeated by Gemini vice president Josh Woodward on X, though Google did not explain how it defines a monthly user or the period over which the numbers were measured. The disclosure refers to the Gemini app itself, not to AI Overviews or AI Mode in Search. Google also said 38% of school-related requests include an attachment, Gemini creates more than 150 million images a day and the iPhone version has more than 100 million active users. The company added that about one in five Gemini Live sessions now involve more than voice, with users also bringing in a live camera feed or screen sharing. However, those figures cover different usage bases and cannot be combined into a single total.
The milestone follows a steep rise in the app’s audience over the past year. Alphabet said in July that Gemini had reached 950 million monthly active users in the second quarter of 2026, up from more than 750 million in the previous quarter. TechCrunch reported at the time that the assistant was closing in on the billion-user mark, putting it closer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June.
Google is also widening the practical scope of the app. During Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, the company said Gemini could automate tasks across more than 40 apps, including services for shopping, restaurant bookings, travel and event tickets. Google’s help page says the screen automation feature is still in beta, limited to select devices and markets, and requires a personal account, age verification and availability in the US or South Korea. The company says supported tasks vary by device, with rides, food and groceries available more broadly than purchases, travel bookings and tickets. Google has also said it is rolling out more than 60 regional dialects to expand voice input, suggesting the company is trying to make voice the default mode for more users while keeping more advanced automation tightly controlled.
For search teams and publishers, the numbers reinforce that Gemini is becoming a meaningful traffic source as well as a consumer product. SE Ranking has previously identified Gemini as a referral source in analytics, so the app may already be visible in site data even where its broader search products are not.
