Google's Gemini hits 1 billion active users, reshaping AI assistant dominance

Google’s Gemini surpasses 1 billion active users, reflecting rapid growth and evolving AI integration across daily tasks, with voice input and visual functionalities leading the charge.

Google has said Gemini now has more than 1 billion monthly active users, a milestone that places the product among its fastest-growing consumer services and underscores the scale AI assistants have reached in everyday use. Media Indonesia reported the figure on 14 August 2026, citing Google data, and described it as a major step in the company’s push to make Gemini a central digital assistant across its services.

The latest tally marks a sharp rise from the roughly 750 million monthly active users reported in February 2026. That earlier figure, covered by PCWorld, came after the launch of Gemini 3 and showed how quickly the service was expanding as Google added more model capabilities and continued investing in both free and paid tiers. By July, TechCrunch said Gemini was already close to the billion-user mark, with more than 950 million monthly active users.

Google’s own figures also suggest that usage is changing, not just growing. Media Indonesia reported that about 63% of users now prefer voice input over typing, a shift helped by Gemini Live, which supports more natural real-time conversation and screen sharing. The same report said Gemini generates more than 150 million images a day and that 38% of student queries now include uploaded documents, indicating deeper use in education and visual tasks. Google has also widened the product’s reach through integration with more than 40 Android apps and by building a sizeable iOS audience of more than 100 million active users, according to the report.

The milestone also sharpens competition with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, although analysts caution that monthly active user counts are not always measured in exactly the same way across companies. TechCrunch and TechRepublic both noted that Gemini’s recent growth has been driven by new features, broader distribution and stronger demand across Google’s AI stack. In that context, the bigger story is not only the size of Gemini’s audience but also Google’s attempt to make the product useful across work, search, messaging and creative tasks.
