Google's new Canvas feature transforms Sheets into interactive data apps, challenging no-code rivals

Google has launched Canvas for Sheets, an AI-powered no-code layer that converts spreadsheets into live, interactive interfaces. This innovation aims to simplify app creation within familiar workflows, potentially disrupting platforms like Airtable and Notion by enabling users to visualise and manipulate data without complex formulas or external applications.

Google has added a new no-code layer to Sheets that could change how many teams build simple tools from data. The company’s Gemini-powered Canvas feature turns an ordinary spreadsheet into an interactive interface, allowing users to describe what they want in plain language and generate views such as Kanban boards, dashboards, seating charts and whiteboards. Google says the aim is to let people see the useful shape of their data quickly, without having to build formulas or move into a separate application. According to Google’s own Sheets and Gemini documentation, the feature is designed to sit inside the spreadsheet rather than replace it, which gives it a different role from a static chart or export.

What makes Canvas notable is the way it keeps the spreadsheet and the generated interface in sync. Changes made in the visual layer update the underlying cells, and edits in the sheet appear immediately in the canvas. That two-way connection makes the feature closer to a live application than a presentation view. Google has also said users can refine the result with follow-up prompts, while its broader Gemini-in-Sheets work has focused on letting people organise and edit spreadsheet content through natural language. In a recent blog post, Google said Gemini in Sheets reached a 70.48% success rate on the SpreadsheetBench dataset, suggesting the company is pushing hard to make Sheets a stronger AI-assisted data environment.

The strategic value is clear. Rather than asking users to adopt another platform, Google is placing a lightweight app-building tool inside a product used by a vast installed base. That creates pressure on products such as Airtable, Notion and Coda, especially for users who only need a simple operational view over data they already keep in Sheets. Google’s broader Gemini Canvas offering also reinforces the direction of travel: the company has positioned Canvas as a way to turn ideas into interactive applications, while Google Workspace updates show that the same AI stack is being extended across documents and spreadsheets.

Canvas is not yet a full replacement for specialist no-code or business intelligence tools. Google’s support material says it is currently available in English and can be used in Google Workspace Experiments for personal accounts, while the launch details indicate that rollout is limited by plan eligibility and platform support. The feature is web-only at launch, and there is no mobile timetable. Independent coverage has also noted broader product limits, including the fact that Canvas is best suited to single-sheet workflows rather than more advanced multi-source or enterprise-sharing use cases. That leaves room for tools with deeper permissions, richer data modelling and stronger admin controls.

Even so, the launch matters because it lowers the threshold for turning spreadsheet data into something more usable. For many teams, the choice is not between Sheets and a fully fledged app platform; it is between staying with a familiar spreadsheet and paying for another service to create a view on top of it. Canvas narrows that gap. If it proves reliable on messy real-world data, rather than only on clean demo sets, it could become one of the more practical AI features Google has added to Workspace.
