Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 introduces a more flexible lock screen and a significantly upgraded Siri AI capable of deeper personal integration, offering richer answers and customised visuals, marking a major shift in user interaction with iPhones.
Apple’s iOS 27 is putting the iPhone lock screen on a more flexible footing, but the biggest change is not visual. According to PhoneArena, the headline feature is the upgraded Siri AI, which is said to deliver far richer answers than the familiar three-link response users have long expected. MacRumors has also reported that Siri’s broader overhaul includes deeper personal context, allowing the assistant to search across Apple apps such as Messages, Mail, Notes, Photos and Calendar to answer specific queries.
The new assistant is not without rough edges. PhoneArena said Siri AI still struggles with long spoken prompts and does not yet match Google Gemini in overall capability, but it is already being positioned as a major shift in how iPhone owners interact with their devices. MacRumors reported that Apple has also built a dedicated Siri app into iOS 27, with text and voice modes and iCloud-synced conversation history across devices.
The lock screen itself is gaining several practical additions. MacRumors reported that Apple is adding an Extend tool, which uses AI to expand or reframe images so they fit the iPhone’s display more naturally. The same report said users will be able to create AI-generated wallpapers through Image Playground, either from the wallpaper picker or directly on the lock screen, with natural-language prompts and stylised versions of photos.
Apple is also giving users more control over layout. MacRumors said iOS 27 adds a compact clock option and lets people move the lock screen clock higher to reveal more of the wallpaper underneath. That should appeal to users who treat the lock screen as a visual display rather than just a notification panel.
One of the more practical changes is the ability to dismiss the Now Playing widget with a swipe. MacRumors reported that this feature was introduced in the first developer build and is designed to prevent accidental taps on playback controls while music continues to play. PhoneArena added that the stable release is expected around mid-September and that compatible devices will include the iPhone 11 line and newer models.
