Lonely Planet launches a new app integrating destination guides, interactive maps, and an AI assistant, redefining travel planning with a blend of curated content and AI-powered assistance.
Lonely Planet is trying to turn its long-standing travel publishing brand into a digital planning tool, with a new app that combines destination guides, maps and an AI assistant. The company has been known for guidebooks for more than half a century, and its latest product brings that editorial model to phones and browsers.
The app lets users search for places they are visiting or considering, then browse recommendations for restaurants, accommodation, attractions and activities. It also includes curated lists, destination guides and interactive maps with walking and driving directions. According to Lonely Planet, the service draws on advice from more than 450 local experts across more than 400 destinations, which is intended to give the app a more selective and editorial tone than a general search engine or chatbot.
A central feature is the AI Guide, which is built to answer travel questions in natural language. Lonely Planet says the tool uses OpenAI’s GPT-4-mini model and is designed to summarise information from the company’s own content rather than replace human editors. In practice, that means a traveller can ask a detailed question such as where to find pubs near Belfast’s Titanic Museum without having to walk far, and receive suggestions shaped around that constraint.
The company has also added more editorial content, including travel features, short videos and stories on destinations and seasonal picks such as where to go in the Caribbean or which places to visit in 2027. Lonely Planet says the app is available free on iPhone, Android and the web, with paid tiers that unlock additional content, including digital and printed guidebooks. The result is a product that sits between a traditional guidebook, a trip planner and a conversational assistant, reflecting how travel research is increasingly moving from static reference material to interactive software.
