Meta AI emerges as a rival to ChatGPT with broader ecosystem integration

Meta’s new standalone AI assistant, now integrated across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, positions itself as a more practical alternative to ChatGPT, focusing on everyday tasks and personalised recommendations.

Meta AI has stepped out of WhatsApp and into its own right. The move gives Meta a stand-alone assistant that feels far closer to ChatGPT and Claude than to the limited chatbot many users knew inside its social apps. TechRadar and Tom’s Guide note that the service now sits across Meta’s wider ecosystem, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, while also being available in browser and mobile app form.

That shift matters because the interface is now familiar and easy to navigate. Arthur Goldstuck found that Meta has borrowed heavily from the standard layout used by rival assistants, with a left-hand menu, chat history and a choice between faster and slower modes. In practice, that makes the product immediately usable, but it also underlines that Meta is still catching up with the more mature desktop-style experiences offered by leading AI tools.

Performance is mixed but improving. Goldstuck reported that the free Instant mode could be sluggish, yet the image-generation side was notably quick, producing a result in about 15 seconds. By comparison, ChatGPT took longer in his test, though its image was more realistic. TechRadar says the upgraded system is powered by Muse Spark, which appears to give Meta AI better responsiveness across text, images and live camera input.

Where Meta AI seems strongest is in short, practical tasks. Goldstuck found it useful for restaurant research because it could rank options using multiple criteria, including reviews, distance and value. That aligns with broader descriptions of the assistant from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide, which say Meta AI is designed to deliver personalised recommendations and other everyday help. However, Goldstuck said longer assignments, such as a 3,000-word market analysis, became weaker as they went on, suggesting the assistant is better suited to lighter research than sustained professional drafting.

Meta is also pushing the product towards agent-like behaviour, with support for email and calendar integration, slide creation, briefings and recurring tasks. Goldstuck said that could make it competitive for scheduling-heavy users, especially as Meta continues rolling out features by market. He also warned that accounts linked through Meta’s Accounts Centre may allow the assistant to draw on profile data and activity from Facebook and Instagram, while its new Incognito Chat mode is being introduced gradually. On pricing, Meta AI remains free at the base level, with optional paid tiers now layered on top.
