Elon Musk’s xAI and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta unveil new AI models that challenge industry giants with improved performance, lower costs, and enhanced usability, signalling a competitive shift in the artificial intelligence sector.
Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have pushed further into the artificial intelligence contest with new model releases that underscore how quickly the field is becoming more crowded. According to Crypto Briefing, xAI’s Grok 4 and Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1, along with Muse Glimmer, have posted strong results on key benchmarks, narrowing the distance with better-known systems from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. The shift suggests that the race is no longer defined only by the largest models, but increasingly by performance, efficiency and price.
Axios reported that the two founders are effectively reasserting themselves in a sector where their companies had often been viewed as secondary players. Their latest releases reflect years of investment in talent, computing infrastructure and acquisitions, and both firms are now trying to compete from a more cost-conscious position. That matters because affordability is becoming a more important buying factor for developers and businesses, even as the most advanced systems remain concentrated at the top end of the market.
Meta’s own announcement said Muse Spark 1.1 is designed for agentic work, meaning tasks in which a model can use tools, interact with software and carry out multi-step actions. The company said the update improves coding, multimodal understanding and computer use, while reducing hallucinations and sycophantic responses. Meta also opened a public preview of its Model API, giving developers access to the system and signalling that the company wants wider adoption beyond its consumer products.
TechCrunch reported that xAI’s Grok 4 arrived alongside a $300 monthly subscription tier, underlining the commercial direction of Musk’s AI business. The model is intended to compete with products such as ChatGPT and Gemini, but its rollout has also drawn attention for integration into X, where Grok’s behaviour has been visible to a large user base. Taken together, the releases show how Meta and xAI are trying to challenge the incumbents not just with model quality, but with tighter product packaging and more aggressive pricing.
