Meta debuts a dedicated Mac application for its AI assistant, aiming to boost its utility for everyday productivity, creative tasks, and business management, closing the gap with rivals like Google and OpenAI.
Meta has launched a dedicated Mac app for its AI assistant, bringing the chatbot onto desktop at a time when it is being repositioned as a more useful productivity tool. The app lets users share a window with Meta AI so it can suggest edits, answer questions or generate content from what is on screen, while also supporting dictation across other applications. The move narrows the gap with rivals such as Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, all of which already offer desktop software. According to The Verge, Meta is pitching the assistant as a more practical day-to-day tool rather than a chatbot confined to the web or mobile.
The company is also expanding Meta AI’s reach for businesses and creators. According to The Verge, the assistant can now connect across the web, mobile and Mac with Instagram and Facebook accounts, Meta ad campaigns and Google Workspace. Meta says that could let users assess post performance by looking at reach, likes, shares and saves, then use those signals to plan what to publish next. It also says the system can draw on account data and web information to produce slides, documents and spreadsheets, and to handle repetitive work such as weekly performance summaries.
The new desktop release builds on Meta’s earlier standalone AI app, which the company launched in April 2025 and built around its Llama 4 model. That app was presented as a more personal assistant centred on voice, with conversational features, image generation and a Discover feed, and it also acts as a companion to Meta’s AI glasses, according to Meta’s own announcement. Axios reported that the latest push is aimed especially at influencers and small businesses, reflecting Meta’s effort to make AI more useful for advertising and commerce. It also noted a privacy consideration: according to Meta’s policy, data shared through the platform, including from business-linked Google accounts, may be used for model training and ad targeting.
