The latest Windows 11 Insider Preview introduces a significant upgrade to Windows Search with semantic indexing on Copilot+ PCs, signalling a move towards more intelligent search capabilities in pre-release builds.
Microsoft’s KB5050083 update, released on January 17, 2025, marked a Dev Channel Insider preview rather than a general Windows 11 release. Build 26120.2992 was based on Windows 11 version 24H2 and was aimed at testers willing to live with unfinished features and the kind of instability that can accompany pre-release software.
The most notable change was an improved Windows Search preview for Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft said the system combined semantic indexing with conventional indexing, allowing people to search in ordinary language rather than relying on exact filenames or phrases. Examples included descriptive queries such as “bridge at sunset” and “Europe trip budget”. The feature was exposed through File Explorer, the taskbar search box and Settings.
At launch, the enhanced search experience was limited to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel Copilot+ devices expected later. Microsoft also tied the rollout to gradual feature delivery, which meant that even two PCs running the same build might not show the same interface. The company said the preview worked on locally stored files in indexed locations, while cloud-photo and broader cloud-file search scenarios were reserved for later flights.
KB5050083 also expanded Click to Do on Copilot+ PCs by adding a Refine action under Rewrite. Microsoft described it as a writing aid for selected text. Elsewhere in the build, File Explorer gained a New Folder option in the navigation pane context menu for some users, while Magnifier received Ctrl+Alt+Minus as a shortcut to toggle between the current zoom level and 1x. Microsoft also adjusted restore behaviour in Windows Backup so that a recovered PC would receive a standard Windows 11 taskbar, although the company said that change was not rolling out in the European Economic Area at that time.
The release also carried several reliability and security changes. Microsoft updated the Windows Kernel vulnerable driver blocklist, which is designed to reduce exposure to Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver attacks. It also documented a range of preview issues, including problems with Search responsiveness, occasional recovery errors on Arm64 systems and some File Explorer quirks. Microsoft later released build 26120.3000 on January 24, 2025, which superseded 26120.2992 and continued the search work with additional cloud-oriented scenarios.
