Microsoft is folding its consumer and work Copilot experiences into a single app, in a move that simplifies the product’s name, icon and web address while keeping the underlying account separation intact. The change affects the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which will be renamed Microsoft Copilot and moved to copilot.cloud.microsoft, with automatic redirection from the old address. Microsoft says the rollout begins in mid-August 2026 and will extend across mobile, web and desktop over the following weeks.
The practical change for users is less about new features than about clearer boundaries. The app will continue to support both Microsoft Entra ID work or school accounts and personal Microsoft accounts, but Microsoft is adding stronger visual cues to show which environment is active. That includes different background colours, a Work label beneath the profile area in the navigation pane and the familiar green data protection shield in the work experience. Microsoft also says users in organisations that allow it will still be able to sign in to personal accounts with Apple or Google credentials.
For administrators, the company says the move does not alter enterprise security, compliance, privacy or government controls. Data entered in the personal experience will remain separate from work data, and the application identifier is unchanged, which should limit policy disruption. Microsoft also says the new cloud.microsoft address keeps the same security and compliance characteristics as the rest of its Microsoft 365 web estate. Even so, IT teams will need to update training material, user guidance and any references to the old name or URL, and reconfigure any Recall filtering policies tied to the previous app name.
The rename is part of a wider summer refresh for Copilot and adjacent Microsoft 365 tools. Windows Central reported that Microsoft has also been refining the Copilot app on Windows 11 with a calmer home screen, quicker access to recent files and app-specific vision features. In the same broader August push, Microsoft is rolling out changes to Copilot Chat on mobile, moving Word’s top-of-document summarisation to other Copilot surfaces and adjusting Agent Builder, while a separate Office licensing shift has already placed most Copilot features behind a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription for commercial customers. Taken together, the changes suggest Microsoft is trying to make Copilot feel more coherent as a platform, even as it narrows or repositions some individual functions.
