Microsoft releases low-disruption Windows 11 26H2 update with new usability and security features

Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows 11 version 26H2, emphasising enhanced usability, file management, and security improvements, predominantly activating existing features with minimal disruption for eligible PCs.

Microsoft has begun distributing Windows 11 version 26H2, the 2026 feature update, to eligible PCs, with the first wave starting at the end of September 2026. According to Microsoft’s own support material and Windows Central, the release is being delivered as a small enablement package rather than a full reinstall, because the relevant code has already arrived on devices through earlier monthly servicing updates. That means most supported PCs on 24H2 or 25H2 should see a short installation process, followed by a restart.

The update is designed to activate features that have already been staged in the operating system, rather than to change the underlying platform in any dramatic way. Microsoft says the package applies to a broad range of editions, including Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise, and that it can also be installed from Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog or Windows Server Update Services. Microsoft’s support page notes that a recent cumulative update is required before the enablement package can be applied.

Several of the most visible changes centre on everyday usability. Windows Central reports that Microsoft is restoring long-requested taskbar flexibility, including the option to move it to any edge of the screen and to use a more compact layout. The same reporting, together with Tom’s Guide, says the Start menu now offers more control over layout and visibility, while Windows Search has been tightened up with better relevance, typo handling and clearer settings for disabling web and Microsoft Store suggestions.

File handling is also getting a practical lift. Notebookcheck says the File Explorer now includes Copilot-powered actions for supported image files and document summaries, with the latter limited to files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint and requiring a Microsoft 365 subscription plus a Copilot licence. The same report says users signed in with work or school accounts can see quicker access to file location tools and a prompt to ask Copilot directly from Explorer. Microsoft has also broadened native archive support to include formats such as .uu, .cpio, .xar and .nupkg.

Beyond convenience features, the release adds a set of security and administration changes aimed more at enterprise environments than at casual users. Notebookcheck says Sysmon is now built into Windows, though it remains disabled by default, and that Microsoft’s enhanced administrator protection is present but also switched off unless an organisation enables it through Intune or Group Policy. The update also introduces API support for post-quantum cryptography algorithms and changes the trust model for cross-signed drivers after an audit period, alongside recovery improvements that extend to Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices and Cloud PCs.

Microsoft and Windows Central both describe 26H2 as a low-disruption milestone update that resets the support clock without resetting the platform. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of servicing from installation, while Enterprise and Education editions get 36 months. Windows Central also notes that the update is not offered to devices on 26H1, which sits on a separate platform branch, and that the rollout is being phased. In practice, this makes 26H2 less a reboot of Windows 11 than a packaging change: the features are already there, and the update simply turns them on for eligible machines.
