Microsoft has issued an out-of-band update, KB5121767, to address performance problems on certain Dell machines affected by a conflict with Intel drivers, easing overheating, shutdowns, and battery drain issues following recent Windows updates.
Microsoft has issued an out-of-band Windows 11 update, KB5121767, to fix performance problems seen on some Dell PCs running version 24H2 and 25H2. According to Microsoft’s support note, the issue affects devices using Intel Innovation Platform Framework drivers, which can alter power use, system behaviour and performance after recent updates.
The bug has been linked to a conflict with Intel IPF on certain Dell desktop and laptop models, including newer Precision, XPS and Pro Max machines. Windows Central reported that affected users had complained of overheating, unexpected shutdowns, slower operation and heavier battery drain after the July Patch Tuesday release, while Microsoft said the fix is aimed only at systems showing those symptoms.
Microsoft says KB5121767 is cumulative, so it includes earlier fixes as well as the targeted repair for the Intel driver conflict. PCWorld reported that the update also lifted Microsoft’s previous block on the July security patch for affected hardware, allowing those machines to move forward once the new package is installed.
For users with automatic updates enabled through “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available”, the patch should arrive without manual action. Microsoft says other users generally do not need to install it, but those with impacted Dell systems can check Windows Update in Settings. After a successful install, Windows 11 25H2 should show build 26200.8894, while 24H2 should show build 26100.8894.
