Microsoft Teams unveils advanced security, AI, and device management features expanding organisational control

Microsoft Teams introduces a suite of new features focused on enhanced security, AI-assisted collaboration, comprehensive call handling, and streamlined device management, promising increased control for organisations.

Microsoft Teams is adding a broader set of administrative and user-facing features that centre on security, AI assistance, call handling and device management. The most immediately practical change for administrators is the new Security detections report in the Teams admin centre, which brings together alerts for issues such as impersonation, malicious links and files that could be used to run code. Microsoft says the report lets admins review triggered detections, investigate details and export the results for further analysis. The documentation places it under Analytics & reports, in Protection reports, although Microsoft has not fully clarified the licensing or broader Defender dependencies behind every detection type.

The security updates also extend to monitoring and auditability. Microsoft is simplifying real-time alerting rules for in-progress meetings and calls, with options to duplicate existing rules, upload users in bulk during creation or editing, and remove rules from the management page. Organisations can monitor up to 500 users across those real-time alerting rules. A new single view for monitoring and troubleshooting meetings and calls on Windows is intended to surface the health of live and past sessions, helping administrators identify recurring faults and patterns. Teams is also changing audit logging for cross-tenant meetings so that participant detail records are shared with all involved tenants, not only the organiser’s tenant, which should make internal investigations easier when meetings span multiple organisations.

Microsoft is also trying to reduce fragmentation in app and agent administration. Changes made in either the Microsoft 365 admin centre or the Teams admin centre can now be applied once and enforced consistently across Teams, Outlook and Microsoft 365 Copilot, rather than behaving differently depending on where the administrator made the change. The Teams admin centre is also gaining a list of custom apps that need updates to work in private and shared channels, which should help tenants identify where developer action is required. On the user side, Microsoft is adding a search box to the Teams Store page and surfacing agents and apps in standard Teams search results.

Copilot is becoming more deeply embedded in conversations and meetings. Users can now invoke Copilot from within a message or selected text in a chat, with Teams passing the surrounding conversation context into the prompt. Microsoft’s support guidance for “Ask Copilot in Microsoft Teams” describes that flow across chats, meeting chats and channel threads, with responses grounded in the selected text and linked sources available for review. Separately, the company is expanding meeting recap with video recap, which combines short clips with AI-generated narration. Microsoft says the feature supports meetings in 23 languages across 31 regional variants, and users can later change the language of an intelligent recap after it has been generated.

The phone and meeting infrastructure is also getting more capable. Teams Phone Agent is now generally available as an AI receptionist that can answer routine questions, book appointments and route callers with an AI-generated summary, supporting more than 60 languages and locales. Call queues are gaining intelligent call recaps, Copilot access from the shared call history, automatic recording and transcription for individual queues, and shared voicemail from auto attendants in the Queues app. On the device side, Microsoft is introducing zero-touch provisioning for devices based on its Android device platform, along with new management functions in the Teams Rooms Pro Management portal. Teams Events is also scaling up, with breakout rooms now supporting up to 1,000 participants across 100 rooms, while Teams optimisation for virtual desktop infrastructure has been extended to Events on Windows.
