Open-source project aims to bring Xbox Game Pass titles to Linux, challenging Windows dominance

A new open-source effort called Xodus could revolutionise Linux gaming by enabling Xbox PC and Game Pass titles to run outside Windows, leveraging reverse engineering of Microsoft’s game platform technologies.

Linux gaming could get a new boost if an open-source effort to run Xbox PC and Game Pass titles outside Windows succeeds. Reporting from Tom’s Hardware says developers behind Heroic Games Launcher have started Xodus, a project aimed at bringing Microsoft’s GDK-based games to Linux by reverse engineering the pieces that normally block them.

The technical hurdle is substantial. Xbox PC titles typically rely on Microsoft’s Game Development Kit, encrypted MSIXVC packaging and Xbox authentication services to verify licences and start games. Tom’s Hardware says Xodus is already handling some of the groundwork, including authorisation, game downloads and package decryption, but the runtime layer needed to actually launch and play the games is still under development.

That matters because Heroic Games Launcher already has a strong position in the Linux gaming ecosystem. The project is an open-source launcher for Epic Games Store, GOG and Amazon Games, and its own site says it supports Linux, Windows, macOS and Steam Deck users. Its existing cross-platform reach gives Xodus a practical base, rather than forcing developers to begin from scratch.

There is also a broader industry context. Microsoft published GDK plug-ins for Unreal Engine in June, making it easier for developers to build and ship Xbox on PC games through supported tooling. That may help normalise the underlying game stack, even as Xodus tries to replicate enough of it on Linux to make these titles usable. For Linux users, the result could be another reason to leave Windows behind, though the project is still at an early stage and full Game Pass support remains prospective rather than proven.
